German football initiatives promote sustainability and fair trade
German football organizations are implementing various initiatives to promote sustainability and fair trade. In Pfungstadt, the city and the organization “Fairein” have distributed fair-trade produced footballs to local clubs. This project aims to raise awareness for sustainable procurement and demonstrate that fair play extends beyond the pitch to include ethical production standards and fair wages for workers in manufacturing countries.
On a national level, the DFB (German Football Association) is launching a sustainability campaign in the 3. Liga titled “Gemeinsam. Gutes Spiel.” During specific matchdays in September, the DFB will donate 100 euros for every goal scored to sustainable projects. The initiative includes various club-led activities such as waste collection, climate-friendly catering, tree planting, and social projects like blood donations to highlight ecological and social responsibility within the sport.
