German Foreign Minister calls for maritime security cooperation

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for enhanced international cooperation to protect global maritime trade routes. Speaking ahead of a high-level meeting in Istanbul, Wadephul warned that disruptions to shipping could lead to global food shortages, specifically noting that delays in chemical fertilizer deliveries pose a significant risk to agriculture.

Wadephul identified several critical security threats, including tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, Houthi rebel attacks on shipping and Saudi Arabia, and Russian strikes against grain shipments in the Black Sea. He accused Russia of deliberately risking food insecurity in the Global South by targeting commercial vessels. He also stated that the international community must not allow Iran and Houthi militias to hold global trade hostage.

The meeting in Istanbul brought together foreign ministers from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom (the E3), alongside Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia (the R4). Participants agreed to hold regular meetings to discuss international conflicts, with the next summit scheduled to take place in Germany. In addition to maritime security, the group discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and violence against Palestinians.
