Panama and Germany strengthen maritime and security cooperation

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino and Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha to reinforce bilateral ties. A central focus of the discussions was the protection of international maritime trade routes and the preservation of the Panama Canal’s neutrality and sovereignty. Both nations emphasized the importance of upholding international maritime law to ensure global supply chain stability amidst geopolitical tensions in regions like the Middle East.

The leaders also addressed cooperation in security, specifically targeting organized crime and drug trafficking. Germany expressed interest in participating in Panama’s strategic infrastructure projects, including railways, roads, and logistics enhancements for the Canal. To support these efforts, a German business delegation is expected to visit Panama soon to explore investment opportunities.

Additionally, Germany provided humanitarian aid to assist those affected by a recent earthquake in Panama. The donation includes essential items such as water filters, cooking sets, blankets, and folding beds.
