German Foreign Minister visits Vatican for Ukraine talks

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is visiting the Vatican to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and potential diplomatic solutions. During his visit, Wadephul is scheduled to meet with representatives of the Catholic charity Sant’Egidio, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States.

The discussions are expected to focus on global crises and the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. This visit follows recent calls from Pope Leo XIV for renewed international efforts to bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table. The Vatican has maintained a position of condemning the invasion while continuing to seek dialogue with Moscow.

Following his meetings in the Vatican, Wadephul will travel to Slovenia to meet with Prime Minister Janez Janša and Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer in Ljubljana.
