German Foreign Minister Wadephul initiates new diplomatic format

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is launching a new diplomatic initiative known as the ‘R4-Format’. Ahead of a meeting in Istanbul, Wadephul explained that he will join his counterparts from France and the United Kingdom to meet with foreign ministers from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Egypt.

The summit aims to address stalled global conflicts, specifically the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. Wadephul highlighted critical economic and humanitarian concerns, noting that the blockade of the Black Sea threatens winter food security and that the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea remain vital ‘lifelines’ for the European economy.

The meeting is considered a novelty due to the specific grouping of nations, particularly as Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have recently formed a defense alliance.
