German foundation condemns AfD's misuse of Stauffenberg legacy

The Stiftung 20 Juli 1944, led by chair Robert von Steinau‑Steinrück, warned that the far‑right AfD is appropriating the memory of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and other resistance figures for its own political agenda. The foundation cited a recent incident in which comedian Uwe Steimle linked Stauffenberg to AfD leader Friedrich Merz, calling the remark “disgusting and repulsive.” Steinau‑Steinrück argued that the AfD’s distortion of the anti‑Nazi resistance seeks to delegitimize Germany’s democratic system.

In parallel, a historical exhibition in Wiesbaden, presented by historian Ruth Hoffmann, examined how Stauffenberg’s failed 1944 assassination attempt on Hitler evolved into a contested national symbol. The display traced the development of German resistance from the early 1930s through the White Rose and highlighted the shifting public perception of Stauffenberg from traitor to emblem of moral courage, underscoring why the date 20 July remains politically charged today.
