German fountains shut down due to low groundwater

Several drinking water fountains in the German region are currently out of operation due to low groundwater levels caused by prolonged dry weather. In Werne, a fountain on the marketplace has remained non-functional since its installation in May 2025.

In Senden, specifically in the Ay district, the fountain near the Maria-Hilf-Kapelle has run dry. Mayor Claudia Schäfer-Rudolf attributed the issue to low groundwater levels in that specific part of the city, noting that while some local fountains remain active, others have been affected by years of increasing dryness. The city is currently investigating a connection to the drinking water network for the Kneipp basin in the city park to address similar issues. Officials emphasized that these outages do not currently impact the general drinking water supply, but highlighted the ongoing responsibility to preserve groundwater reserves for the future.
