German fruit‑washing experts debunk TikTok baking‑soda cleaning craze

Consumer influencers on TikTok have promoted soaking fruit in a baking‑soda (Natron) solution to remove pesticide residues. Scientists at the Kompetenzzentrum Obstbau‑Bodensee (KOB) in Ravensburg say the method is unnecessary and can even harm fruit quality. Ulrich Mayr of KOB called the trend “the biggest nonsense” and warned that a simple rinse with cold running water is sufficient. Studies cited by the German Verbraucherzentrale show that while the solution can reduce surface pesticides such as thiabendazole and phosmet, it does not eliminate all residues, especially fat‑soluble or systemic pesticides that penetrate the fruit's interior.

Experts recommend rinsing fruit under running water, using a brush for harder produce, and choosing organic options for those wanting to avoid pesticides. They also note that prolonged soaking can leach water‑soluble nutrients like vitamin C.
