German fuel cell firms expand portfolios through deals with Siqens and Fuelcell Energy

SFC Energy signed a contract on 1 July 2026 to acquire the methanol‑reformer technology of the insolvent Munich‑based Siqens GmbH. The purchase price is in the upper six‑figure‑euro range and the deal includes patents, trademarks and the existing customer base. The Siqens reformer bridges the gap between SFC’s direct‑methanol cells (<1 kW) and its hydrogen systems (>5 kW), enabling on‑site generation of hydrogen for power outputs of 1–5 kW without compressed‑hydrogen logistics. Target markets cited are defense, public‑safety, telecommunications and other critical‑infrastructure applications.

Separately, Siemens announced a cooperation agreement with U.S. firm Fuelcell Energy to develop large‑scale fuel‑cell power generation. Siemens will supply balance‑of‑plant electrical systems for projects exceeding 100 MW, while Fuelcell Energy provides the core fuel‑cell technology. The partnership aims to accelerate deployment of decentralized energy solutions, with pilot projects exploring medium‑voltage DC supply and modular electric systems for energy‑intensive users.
