German gaming study shows video games combat loneliness
A study conducted by YouGov on behalf of the German games industry association, Game, indicates that video games serve as a significant tool for maintaining social connections and combating loneliness.
According to the survey of 2,105 people in Germany, approximately 42 percent of gamers use video games to stay in touch with friends, acquaintances, or family members. This represents roughly 20 million people in the country. The data suggests that gaming acts as a digital meeting point that can bridge distances and different life situations.
Key findings from the report include: • 76 percent of respondents believe video games can help people who feel lonely by allowing them to meet like-minded individuals. • 73 percent are convinced that gaming can help reduce feelings of loneliness. • 30 percent of players have arranged to meet fellow gamers in real life. • 81 percent view video games as a hobby that can connect people across different generations.
Felix Falk, Managing Director of Game, stated that gaming brings people together across generations and distances, serving as an effective means against loneliness and supporting mental health.
