German gardeners advised on ant control and wildlife aid amid summer heat

Homeowners in Germany are being encouraged to manage yellow meadow ant (Lasius flavus) infestations on lawns using simple, non‑chemical methods. The Landwirtschaftskammer Nordrhein‑Westfalen recommends placing jam‑filled glasses near ant nests to attract and relocate the insects, or using an overturned pot to gently lift nests for disposal. A homemade wormwood (Wermut) juice can also deter ants.

At the same time, the heatwave is prompting advice on supporting garden wildlife. NABU warns that natural water sources are drying up, leaving birds, hedgehogs, insects and other small creatures at risk of dehydration. Simple measures such as placing shallow water dishes in shaded spots, creating DIY bird baths, and adding stones or wood for insects to drink from are recommended to provide safe drinking stations throughout the garden.
