German gastronomy sector drives economic and social value

The German gastronomy sector plays a vital role in both the economy and social cohesion. According to the OpenTable Restaurant Impact Report 2026, approximately one-third of respondents visit a local restaurant, café, or bar at least weekly, with 99 percent viewing these establishments as indispensable to their communities.

Economically, the industry employs around 2.2 million people in Germany. Beyond direct revenue, restaurants stimulate local spending; over half of surveyed guests reported spending an average of 119 euros at neighboring businesses before or after their meal. Additionally, 83 percent of operators believe their businesses are key drivers of the local economy through jobs and regional supply chains.

Socially, 88 percent of respondents identify these venues as important gathering places, and 85 percent state that restaurant visits enhance their personal and social well-being.

Despite these positive indicators, the industry faces local volatility. In the Lake Constance region, specifically Konstanz, the landscape is shifting with a mix of new openings—such as the Italian 'Rossini' and Vietnamese 'MOC 1989'—and closures, such as 'Saba Deli', illustrating that high occupancy does not always guarantee long-term stability for operators.
