German Gen Z workers hide AI tool use amid career anxieties

A new three‑part interview series in Germany explores how young people choose careers amid uncertainty, social‑media influence and the rise of artificial intelligence. Youth researcher Simon Schnetzer and Ausbildungskompass director Monika Uhl discuss how AI and digital platforms shape vocational expectations and how employers struggle to attract this generation.

Separate research shows that 42 percent of German Generation Z employees conceal their use of AI tools from supervisors, citing feelings of guilt and fear of being perceived as cheating. Over half view AI at work as fraudulent, while 36 percent of firms actively seek candidates with AI expertise. The studies highlight a growing gap between workplace expectations and the personal ethics of young workers.

These findings point to a broader tension in the German labour market, where rapid digitalisation collides with youth career aspirations and concerns about privacy, surveillance and digital fatigue.
