German government boosts AI Gigafactory funding to €1 billion
The German federal government has increased its contribution to the planned AI‑Gigafactory in Germany by about €200 million, raising the total national funding to €1 billion. The previous allocation was roughly €805 million. The additional money is taken from the Special Fund for Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality (SVIK) and has already been incorporated into the current budget.
The European Commission has launched a tender for up to seven AI‑Gigafactories across Europe, with a total project volume exceeding €30 billion, of which €10 billion is public funding (half from EU sources, half from national budgets). Applications close on 12 November 2026 and the first facilities are expected to be operational by mid‑2028. The programme aims to strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on US and Chinese AI infrastructure. Companies such as Polarise are preparing consortium bids to take part in the tender.
