German Government Cuts 600M from Development Aid in 2027 Budget Draft

On 6 July the German federal government presented its draft budget for 2027. While the overall state budget is projected to grow, the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) faces a reduction of roughly €600 million, marking the seventh consecutive year of shrinking funding for international development and humanitarian assistance.

At the same time, allocations for defence and disaster‑risk management are set to increase, reflecting a policy shift toward security and resilience. Officials warned that cuts to development cooperation could generate higher future costs, as reduced investment in stable partner countries may undermine long‑term security, global health, climate action and job creation.

The plan has sparked debate over the trade‑off between short‑term fiscal tightening and the longer‑term benefits of international aid, with critics arguing that Germany risks creating a “vacuum” in global partnerships while the rest of the world faces escalating challenges.
