German government faces growing criticism as protests swell and poll shows waning support

More than 1,300 people gathered in Karlsruhe and over 1,000 in Ulm to demonstrate against the coalition’s social‑policy reforms, saying changes to pensions, care, labour and health would weaken the welfare state. Trade unions and social groups have called for nationwide protests, reflecting a broader loss of confidence in Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration.

An Ipsos survey conducted 3‑5 July 2026 finds that a clear majority of Germans view the government’s performance as deteriorating across most policy areas. Only 32 % see any improvement in defence capability, while support for the economy, infrastructure, internal security and climate policy is largely negative. The poll records the lowest optimism for affordable housing, with just 6 % perceiving progress and 69 % reporting setbacks.
