German government faces pressure to cut electricity tax as fuel rebate ends

Consumer protection groups in Germany are urging the government to introduce a permanent reduction of the electricity tax for households as the temporary fuel price rebate (Tankrabatt) is set to expire. The head of the consumer federation, Ramona Pop, said, “Die Politik muss jetzt nachlegen,” arguing that a lasting measure such as lowering the electricity tax would provide immediate relief and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder acknowledged the imminent end of the two‑month fuel rebate, noting that it now costs about €1.6 billion and cannot be continued indefinitely. He said the government is monitoring price developments and will consider further, possibly more targeted, price‑relief measures, though he did not specify what they might be. Both sides stress the need for additional support for households after the rebate lapses.
