German government rejects fuel price cap proposal amid rising gasoline costs
After the end of the temporary fuel discount on July 1, 2026, German states Saarland and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern pushed for a nationwide fuel price ceiling modeled on Luxembourg's system. The proposal, citing unstable supply routes through the Strait of Hormuz, was presented to the Bundesrat but failed to secure a majority, leaving the initiative dead.
An ADAC analysis of fuel prices in April showed that drivers refueling at highway stations in Lower Saxony pay on average 34‑35 cents per litre more than at off‑highway stations, costing roughly €17 extra for a 50‑litre fill‑up. The study advises motorists to exit the autobahn for cheaper fuel, a practice already adopted by about two‑thirds of surveyed drivers.
