German government stake in tank maker KNDS in jeopardy ahead of 2026 IPO
The German federal government intends to acquire a sizeable share in the German‑French defence contractor KNDS before the company goes public. The planned stake is expected to be between 30% and 40%, with the Defence Ministry pushing for 40% to match French ownership, while the Economic Ministry and the Chancellor’s Office argue for roughly 30% to avoid over‑capitalising the firm.
KNDS insists on a June 2026 initial public offering and rejects any post‑IPO state entry, creating a tight timetable. Internal disagreement and the ambition of an early listing have raised the risk that the state participation will not materialise, jeopardising Berlin’s aim to preserve national security interests and to prevent full French control of the tank manufacturer.
