German government targets rent law reforms by late 2026

The German Federal Government has stated that the ongoing deliberations of the expert group on rent law are confidential to encourage open exchange. In response to an inquiry from the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary group, the government noted that the commission is working toward two primary reform goals: introducing fines for violations of the rent brake and revising Section 5 of the Economic Offences Act.

According to the coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU, and SPD, the commission is expected to present its results by the end of 2026. The group began its work in September 2025, focusing on clarifying rent usury regulations and establishing penalties for non-compliance with rent control measures.
