Germany to take 40% stake in Franco‑German defence firm KNDS
The German government announced plans to acquire a 40 % share in KNDS, the Franco‑German defence consortium formed by Krauss‑Maffei Wegmann and Nexter. The French state already holds about 50 % of the company, while the remaining shares are owned by the German founding families.
The deal, presented as a strategic move to secure long‑term influence over a key European defence supplier of Leopard and Leclerc tanks, Puma IFVs and Boxer/Dingo armoured vehicles, is intended to reinforce industrial value creation, technological sovereignty and jobs in Germany. It comes amid heightened security concerns following Russia’s war in Ukraine and doubts about U.S. security guarantees.
A parliamentary budget committee must still approve the transaction. The agreement also paves the way for a potential dual‑stock‑exchange listing in Frankfurt and Paris, with a projected valuation of €15‑18 billion. German spokesperson Stefan Kornelius and Economic Minister Katherina Reiche emphasized the importance of an equal partnership with France for Europe’s defence capability.
