German Greens criticize staff cuts for federal tax auditors
The Green Party in the Bundestag has criticized the German federal government's plan to reduce staff among federal tax auditors. Finance politician Katharina Beck warned that cutting these positions could hinder the detection of complex tax fraud schemes, specifically Cum-Ex and Cum-Cum transactions.
According to data from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Central Tax Office had 492 auditor positions filled last year. Beck noted that these roles are highly cost-effective, with each auditor conducting joint audits with states that generate an average of nearly nine million euros for the state. The government reported a tax surplus of 4.37 billion euros for the previous year.
While the Ministry of Finance stated it is currently processing six Cum-Cum cases involving approximately 46 million euros in recoveries, Beck pointed out that scientific estimates place the total tax damage from Cum-Cum transactions as high as 28.5 billion euros.
