Berlin parties agree to coalition talks amid antisemitism debate

In Berlin, the SPD, Greens, and The Left have reached an agreement to begin exploratory talks for a coalition government following the recent elections. The Left emerged as the largest party with 25.7% of the vote, followed by the CDU at 18.8%. A critical component of these negotiations is a shared commitment to combating antisemitism. The parties have agreed to adopt the definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance and to implement measures to ensure accountability for antisemitic incidents.

At the federal level, the Union and SPD leadership held a four-hour meeting in the coalition committee to discuss economic growth, the 2027 budget, and social reforms. While the atmosphere was reported as constructive, discussions continue regarding the implementation of pension, tax, and labor market reforms. Additionally, a debate has emerged within the CDU regarding inheritance tax, as the party's labor group has proposed a rethink of taxation on large inheritances to ensure fairer property policy.
