German grocery retail: Consumer strategies for Edeka and Lidl

Consumers shopping at major German retailers like Edeka and Lidl face various factors that can influence total costs and value perception. At Edeka, higher-than-expected bills are often driven by smaller packaging volumes, strategic product placement, and the use of app-based discounts that may require sharing personal data. The consumer protection agency (Verbraucherzentrale) warns that promotional displays can sometimes feature more expensive brand-name items rather than true bargains, and advises shoppers to check the unit price (Grundpreis) to ensure accurate comparisons.

At discounters like Lidl, approximately 75 percent of the assortment consists of private labels designed as affordable alternatives to major brands. These house brands, such as Milbona for dairy or Freeway for beverages, are often produced by well-known manufacturers. While these products offer a lower price point, they serve as the primary way for discounters to maintain a high price-performance ratio across categories including chocolate, meat, and cleaning supplies.
