German nutrition authority outlines protein needs for women over 50 and seniors

Germany’s Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (DGE) advises women up to age 65 to consume 0.8 g protein per kilogram body weight daily and recommends raising that to 1.0–1.2 g/kg during menopause. For adults aged 65 and older, the DGE sets a minimum intake of 1.0 g/kg. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites a baseline of about 0.83 g/kg for healthy adults, while active individuals and athletes may need 1.2–1.6 g/kg or up to 2.0 g/kg. Some recent studies suggest seniors could benefit from up to 2.2 g/kg. Eggs provide roughly 7 g of high‑quality protein per medium egg (≈60 g) and deliver essential vitamins and minerals. The Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) warns that daily egg consumption may double heart‑disease risk in people with diabetes and stresses that raw or insufficiently cooked eggs can carry salmonella, recommending thorough cooking.

These guidelines aim to support muscle maintenance, bone health, and overall wellbeing, especially for women in mid‑life and older adults facing age‑related muscle loss.
