German Health Experts Recommend Cutting Daily Sugar Intake
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) advises that added sugars should make up no more than ten percent of daily energy intake, roughly 50 grams for adults. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets a stricter target of five percent, about 25 grams per day, covering both added sugars and those in honey, syrups and fruit juices.
Sugary drinks represent the largest source of excess sugar. Replacing sodas, soft drinks and sweetened teas with water, unsweetened tea or flavored water made with fruit, cucumber or mint can dramatically lower intake. Additional steps include reading ingredient lists to spot hidden sugars such as dextrose, fructose or maltose, choosing fresh over processed foods, and opting for nuts or whole‑grain muesli instead of sugary snacks. Small, consistent changes in shopping habits and beverage choices can help people adapt their taste buds and sustain a healthier diet.
