German Health Experts Warn of Heart Risk from Low Water Intake

A study cited by Dr. Natalia Dmitrieva of the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute warns that insufficient daily fluid intake can trigger physiological mechanisms that increase the risk of heart failure. The researchers recommend maintaining adequate hydration to prevent these heart‑related changes.

German nutrition specialist Hans Hauner, head of the Else‑Kröner‑Fresenius Centre for Nutritional Medicine, says that fluid needs vary by individual. He advises a baseline of 1.5–2 liters per day for most people, with higher amounts required in hot weather or during intense physical activity. Hauner also proposes a weight‑based guideline of 30–40 ml of water per kilogram of body weight. Both experts stress that dehydration can quickly impair physical and mental performance, causing fatigue, dizziness, reduced concentration and headaches.
