German health guidance warns of heavy legs and risky drinks in summer heat
Health experts in Germany explain that high temperatures cause blood vessels to expand, slowing blood flow back to the heart and leading to heavy, swollen legs, especially for people who sit or stand long, are overweight or have vein weakness. Recommended measures include drinking 1.5–2 liters of water or unsweetened tea daily, regular walking, cycling or swimming to activate calf muscles, elevating the legs above heart level for 10–15 minutes several times a day, eating a low‑salt, high‑fiber diet, applying cool compresses, and using properly fitted compression stockings when needed.
Separate advice on beverages advises consuming plain water, mineral water, unsweetened herbal or fruit teas, and lightly flavored fruit‑water mixes while limiting sugary sodas, pure fruit juices, black tea, coffee, alcohol and drinks that are excessively hot or cold. The goal is to stay hydrated without adding unnecessary calories or stimulating the circulatory system, thereby reducing the risk of dehydration, circulatory strain, or kidney problems during heat waves.
