Germany police issue warnings against various fraud schemes
German police and consumer protection agencies are issuing warnings regarding several distinct fraudulent schemes targeting various demographics.
In several incidents, criminals used impersonation tactics. In Dabringhausen and Neunburg vorm Wald, scammers posed as police officers to steal jewelry from elderly victims. Similarly, in the Wartburgkreis and Heinersreuth, perpetrators used “shock calls” involving fake fatal accidents to extort large sums of money or valuables from seniors and children.
Digital fraud is also on the rise. The Freiburg police warned of “Quishing,” where manipulated QR codes lead victims to fake banking websites to steal credentials. In Oberhausen, scammers used TikTok to lure victims into purchasing Amazon gift cards under false pretenses. Additionally, a 71-year-old in Greiz was defrauded of thousands of euros by someone posing as a debt collection agent regarding a fake lottery contract.
Authorities emphasize that legitimate police officers will never demand cash, jewelry, or valuables for investigations, and citizens should always verify emergency calls by independently dialing 110.
