German health law classifies weight‑loss drugs as lifestyle medicines
Since 2004 Germany has excluded weight‑loss medications from reimbursement by the statutory health insurance, labeling them as lifestyle drugs. In March 2024 the Gemeinsame Bundesausschuss upheld this exclusion for the GLP‑1 drug Wegovy, meaning patients must usually pay for such treatments themselves.
A survey of 409 German adults commissioned by the health‑promotion group FIT fürs Leben found that four‑in‑ten respondents view overweight primarily as a matter of personal will, and a similar share consider severely overweight individuals largely responsible for their weight. Only a small minority see obesity as a chronic disease. Eight‑in‑ten participants believe people with overweight face frequent discrimination, while about half of those who are overweight report feeling shame and fear that doctors will merely advise them to lose weight. By contrast, only roughly one‑sixth of respondents without overweight share that concern.
