German Health Minister Nina Warken Faces Protest Over Planned Care Cuts in Essen

On 30 June, the inauguration of a new nuclear‑medicine department at the University Hospital Essen was attended by local officials, including Essen mayor Thomas Kufen, North‑Rhine Westphalia premier Hendrik Wüst, and Federal Health Minister Nina Warken. During the event, roughly 70 staff members from the university, LVR, and Alfried‑Krupp hospitals gathered on the premises to protest the government's planned reductions in health‑care funding.

Protesters chanted slogans such as “Warken hier, Merz dort – Schluss mit Kürzen” and demanded an end to the cuts. Security personnel kept a distance from the official ceremony, and the politicians withdrew from the venue while applause continued from staff in nearby windows. The organisers, representing ver.di, called for the protest movement to continue and announced a follow‑up rally for 11 July at the Marktkirche in Essen.
