German health sector hit by €130 million fund losses and underfunded hospital investments
The Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (KV) of Baden-Württemberg has sued the initiators of the Verius real‑estate financing fund in Frankfurt, claiming a loss of €44 million. Other KVs and statutory health insurers have joined the action, bringing the total claimed losses from the fund to around €130 million out of €1.2 billion invested, with 96 % already lost after the fund was frozen in 2022 following developer defaults. The fund was structured through a Luxembourg purpose‑vehicle that portrayed it as low‑risk.
A separate study of the Investitionsbewertungsrelationen catalogue reveals that German federal states are providing only about half of the financing they are obligated to supply for hospital (clinic) investments, highlighting chronic underfunding of healthcare infrastructure.
