Lake Como faces landscape concerns amid luxury tourism surge
The Lake Como region is undergoing rapid transformation due to a surge in luxury tourism projects, including new hotels, resorts, and spas. The association Italia Nostra has raised alarms regarding the potential impact on the area’s historical and natural landscape.
According to a document titled ‘Ferite sul paesaggio lariano’, the Lariano territory is seeing approximately 30% of all Italian investments in the hotel and resort sector, despite representing less than 1% of the country's land area. Critics argue that while these projects attract international investors, they may negatively affect residents by reducing collective spaces, increasing traffic, and straining public services.
Specific contested projects include a large-scale development in Torno near Villa Pliniana and a restaurant, spa, and hotel complex in Gravedona at the mouth of the Liro river. These developments are viewed by conservationists as threats to the identity and historical value of the region.
