German healthcare debate focuses on insurance-based appointment disparities
Debate continues in Germany regarding whether medical practitioners prioritize private insurance patients over those with statutory health insurance. While many patients report longer wait times for specialists and appointments when they are covered by statutory insurance, medical professionals in Bavaria argue that treatment and scheduling are based on medical urgency rather than insurance status.
General practitioners in Harburg state that they do not differentiate between patient types during treatment. However, they highlight a systemic issue regarding reimbursement: private insurance is paid based on specific services rendered, whereas statutory insurance uses a flat-rate system. These practitioners suggest that a service-based compensation model for all patients would be fairer. There are also concerns regarding the proposed ‘primary care system,’ which would mandate general practitioners as the first point of contact for all patients.
