German healthcare sector faces administrative and financial pressures

German healthcare officials and labor representatives are raising concerns regarding the financial and administrative pressures facing the medical and nursing sectors.

Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach has called on the federal government to expedite the planned de-bureaucratization law. Gerlach emphasized that hospitals are under significant financial strain and that excessive administrative requirements are diverting essential resources and time away from patient care. She urged Federal Health Minister Carsten Linnemann to implement the relief measures previously promised by the former minister to support medical and nursing staff.

In Rheinland-Pfalz, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) has warned of a potential cost explosion resulting from planned nursing care reforms. The DGB predicts that changes to how performance supplements are staggered for inpatient care could lead to an average additional cost of approximately 1,530 euros per person over the first 18 months. DGB regional leader Susanne Wingertszahn warned that these increased costs could push more seniors below the poverty line, placing a heavier financial burden on municipalities that provide social assistance for care costs.
