German highway rest areas face high costs from vandalism

Highway rest areas in southwestern Germany are facing significant challenges due to vandalism, hygiene issues, and property damage. The Autobahn GmbH Niederlassung Südwest reports that cleaning crews must be deployed multiple times daily to address sanitary facilities that are frequently closed due to technical defects or intentional destruction. Annual costs for repairing such damage, which includes graffiti on noise barriers and the destruction of building interiors, reach six-figure amounts.

Private operators are also reporting issues. Via Solutions Südwest, which manages a 60-kilometer stretch of the A5 between Malsch and Offenburg, noted recent incidents at the Gottswald and Feldmatt rest areas. The company reported that toilet walls were covered with over 100 stickers and has filed a police report regarding the matter.
