Germany healthcare faces medication errors and rising hospital bureaucracy

Recent studies and reports highlight systemic challenges within the German healthcare and caregiving sectors. A study by the Zentrum für Qualität in der Pflege (ZQP) reveals that approximately 50 percent of people requiring care have had medications administered incorrectly or not at all within the last six months. This issue is compounded by the high psychological burden on family caregivers, 53 percent of whom report feeling mentally strained.

In the hospital sector, the Deutsche Krankenhausgesellschaft (DKG) has criticized the increasing bureaucratic burden caused by audits from the Medizinischer Dienst (MD). These audits reportedly cost German hospitals approximately 245 million euros annually, requiring roughly 4,000 full-time employees to manage. DKG Chairman Gerald Gaß described the situation as a “culture of mistrust” that serves as a tool for cost optimization rather than quality improvement.

Additionally, health insurers like Barmer have raised concerns regarding dental preventative care for those in need of long-term care. Data indicates that only 4.2 percent of home-based care recipients utilized dental preventative services in 2024, compared to 26.9 percent of those in stationary care. Meanwhile, reforms in caregiving services, such as the introduction of the relief budget in July 2025, aim to provide more immediate support for those requiring respite care.
