Baden-Württemberg hospitals warn of rising deficits and insolvency risks

Hospital operators in Baden-Württemberg have issued urgent warnings regarding a potential wave of insolvencies within the regional healthcare sector. Projections indicate that hospital deficits are expected to rise from 880 million euros in 2026 to 1.6 billion euros in 2027.

Various regional associations, including the Landkreistag, Städtetag, Gemeindetag, and both the Catholic and Protestant churches, are calling for a hospital emergency aid program to secure inpatient care. A major concern is the potential for multi-billion euro liabilities; if hospitals become insolvent, they may be required to provide compensation for employee pension claims held by supplementary pension funds (Zusatzversorgungskassen).

In East Hesse, the Klinikum Hersfeld-Rotenburg and the Kreiskrankenhaus Rotenburg anticipate annual losses of several million euros due to federal health reforms. These institutions expressed concern over how medical structures in rural areas will be maintained if funding is reduced under new specialization-focused policies.
