German housing market shows rising construction permits and mortgage volume
Data from 2026 indicates a shift in the German housing market. According to the Deutsche Bundesbank, new residential construction loans granted to private households totaled 19.8 billion euros in June 2026, an increase from 17.2 billion euros in May.
Building activity is also on the rise. The Federal Statistical Office reported that 126,300 building permits were issued in the first half of 2026, representing a 15.1 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
As remote work becomes a permanent fixture for many, the demand for functional living spaces has evolved. Home office setups are increasingly being integrated into residential layouts, requiring careful consideration of square footage and financing for larger or more specialized living environments.
