German economy shows mixed signals as costs and uncertainty pressure firms
A July 2026 Randstad‑ifo survey of German companies found that 63 % see high energy, material or operating costs as their biggest burden, 62 % cite uncertainty about economic development, and 45 % flag weak demand or order decline. While skills shortages remain a concern for 36 % of firms, the survey’s CEO Henri Viswat said the numbers "show no relief for the skills shortage, but a shift in acute priorities."
The Ifo Institute reported that German gross domestic product grew by 0.2 % in the second quarter of 2026, driven by expansionary fiscal policy and strong export activity. Ifo chief economist Timo Wollmershäuser described the growth as a signal that the industrial base is regaining stability despite high energy prices and the ongoing Iran‑US conflict.
The Bundesbank echoed a modest “mini‑growth” outlook, noting a slight real‑GDP increase in Q2 2026 despite the war in the Persian Gulf. The same report highlighted a rise in US consumer‑confidence to 90.8 points in July, suggesting broader macro‑economic resilience.
Meanwhile, the DIW Berlin business barometer fell to 91.3 points in July, the lowest since autumn 2025, reflecting geopolitical uncertainty, elevated energy costs and a slowdown in export demand. DIW chief Geraldine Dany‑Knedlik warned that the volatile situation continues to weigh on the German economy.
An Ifo survey on material supply chains showed that 13.7 % of firms reported procurement problems in July, down from 17.2 % in June, with notable improvements in the chemical sector but persistent bottlenecks in technology and electrical industries.
