German industry calls for action over low water logistics risks

German industry representatives are calling for urgent action to address logistical challenges caused by persistent low water levels. Representatives from the Association of the Grain, Milling and Starch Industry (VGMS) and the Federal Association of German Inland Waterway Shipping (BDB) have expressed concerns regarding the economic impact of the water shortage.

VGMS Managing Director Peter Haarbeck noted that none of the primary transport modes—waterways, rail, or road—are currently capable of compensating for capacity bottlenecks in others. He specifically highlighted that while rail is a vital alternative for transporting large quantities of goods over long distances, the German rail system is currently unable to provide reliable freight services due to infrastructure issues and organizational difficulties.

The situation is also impacting the food and nutrition sectors, with companies like Südzucker weighing in on the challenges. Industry leaders are urging the Federal Transport Minister, Steffen Bilger, to address the lack of reliable alternatives to inland shipping.
