European Union develops new trade defense tools against China

European Union leaders are moving to strengthen the bloc’s industrial competitiveness by developing new trade defense mechanisms. Following a summit in Brussels, the European Commission has been tasked with creating a tool that could potentially restrict market access for unfair partners or even block entire countries from the single market in extreme cases of economic coercion.

This push for stronger protections, supported by France and Germany, aims to counter unfair competition, state subsidies, and overcapacity, particularly from China. The EU is also working on measures to diversify supply chains for strategic products and establish a solidarity mechanism to support member states facing economic retaliation.

A preliminary agreement has already been reached to limit Chinese exports of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to the EU to 350,000 units annually over a four-year period. This follows growing concerns over the EU's significant trade deficit with China, which reached approximately 360 billion euros last year and was reported to reach 1 billion euros per day in 2025. In response, China has warned the EU not to underestimate its determination to protect its own interests.
