AfD Faces Expulsion Threats and Election Fallout in Germany

The German industry lobby BDI warned that any participation of the AfD in the upcoming state governments of Saxony‑Anhalt, Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern and Berlin would be “fatal” for the economy, deterring investment and creating uncertainty, said chief executive Tanja Gönner.

In Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, the FDP launched its campaign for the September 20 Landtag election, positioning itself as a rational middle ground between the traditional parties.

Bundestag President Julia Klöckner threatened to expel the entire AfD parliamentary faction after MP Martin Sichert called coalition members “liars” and blamed them for patient deaths during a debate on health‑insurance reforms. She warned that a repeat of such interruptions would lead to a “final” expulsion.

The Bundestag eventually passed the contested health‑insurance stabilization law, despite the heated debate.

A separate dispute arose in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern where the Left party was accused of blocking a Verfassungsschutz report on the AfD. The Left denied the allegation, stating no such action was taken.
