German industry proposes Smart Meter Light using existing technology

Competitive metering point operators (wMSB) and smart meter industry companies, including Solandeo and Hausheld, have submitted a position paper proposing a pragmatic approach to 'Smart Meter Light'.

The proposal suggests utilizing established 1:n technology within existing Smart Meter Gateways rather than developing new hardware. This method would allow multiple spatially separated customers to share a single gateway, potentially lowering costs, simplifying processes, and maintaining existing cybersecurity and data protection standards.

By leveraging infrastructure already certified by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), proponents argue that the rollout could be faster and more economical. Bouke Stoffelsma, CEO of Hausheld AG, stated that the industry should not 'reinvent the wheel' and that opening existing gateways for this purpose would allow for more efficient scaling.
