German auto industry seeks protection as Chinese EV market share rises
The German automotive industry is shifting its stance toward China, moving from opposing trade barriers to potentially supporting them. The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) is currently evaluating whether to adjust its position as Chinese manufacturers rapidly expand their presence in Europe.
Market data indicates a significant surge in Chinese vehicle sales. In the first half of 2026, the market share of Chinese brands in Europe rose to nearly 10 percent, up from 0.5 percent in 2021. Specifically, Chinese manufacturers hold approximately 28 percent of the European plug-in hybrid market and between 14 and 16 percent of the fully electric vehicle market.
Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has called on European Union and German policymakers to establish “fair competition conditions.” Industry leaders have expressed concern that European manufacturers cannot compete with the low production costs of Chinese companies such as BYD, SAIC, Geely, and Leapmotor. This pressure comes as the Chinese domestic market saw a 20 percent decline in the first half of 2026, prompting Chinese firms to aggressively pursue European market share to offset domestic losses.
