Germany plans new identity cards without printed addresses

The German Federal Ministry of the Interior is evaluating a new generation of identity cards that could omit the printed residential address. This move aims to reduce bureaucracy, specifically eliminating the need for address stickers when citizens move.

Proposed enhancements include larger photographs, improved cryptographic security, and the integration of a Data-Matrix code to facilitate easier identity verification. The removal of the physical address is also being considered to improve security; the Bundestag Petitions Committee noted that printed addresses pose a risk if an ID is stolen alongside house keys.

For instances where the ID is required as proof of address, such as for opening bank accounts, the ministry is looking into accessible digital solutions. A full conception of the new document is expected to continue until the end of 2027.
