German investigators probe links between Serbian arrests and Leipzig drone attack

German and Serbian authorities are investigating a potential link between two men arrested near the Serbian-Hungarian border in June and an attempted explosive drone attack at the Leipzig/Halle airport in August.

The suspects, identified by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) as Danilo B. and Slobodan Đ., were apprehended on June 11 while traveling toward the Hungarian border. During the arrests, authorities discovered a drone in Danilo B.’s Peugeot and two metal boxes containing explosives in a hidden compartment of Slobodan Đ.’s Volvo.

Danilo B., a 35-year-old Belgrade native, has significant ties to Russia, having lived and worked in Saint Petersburg. He holds a degree from Saint Petersburg State University and has participated in events hosted by the Alexander Gorchakov Foundation, an organization linked to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The investigation also encompasses a separate case from April involving the discovery of four kilograms of explosives near a gas pipeline in Magyarkanizsa. The suspects have been in custody since June 12.
