Google adds deletion notice to German restaurant and hotel reviews

Google Maps now displays a warning on the profiles of many German restaurants and hotels indicating that one or more reviews have been removed after complaints of defamation. A Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa) sample of more than 3,700 establishments showed that between 11 % and 30 % of businesses had reviews deleted, with the highest rates in large cities – roughly one‑third of venues in Berlin, Cologne and Frankfurt displayed the notice, versus about 15 % in smaller cities such as Dresden or Magdeburg.

Experts say star ratings are a decisive factor for consumers; a single‑star increase can boost a local business’s revenue by up to 20 %. Professor Steffen Kroschwald (Hochschule Pforzheim) and Dehoga‑head Jürgen Benad stressed that online reputation directly influences demand and even employment.

A new Berlin‑based service, 5sterne.net, offers fully automated removal of alleged unjust or fake Google reviews. Companies can select reviews they consider illegitimate, submit them through the platform, and pay only if Google actually deletes the entry. The service markets itself as a risk‑free way to protect a business’s online reputation.
