German journalist exposes Russian intelligence network via undercover operation

German journalist Angelika Geraja, working for RTL, Stern, and ntv, conducted an undercover investigation into a Russian ‘one-time agent’ network in Germany. By posing as a pro-Putin supporter named ‘Katja’ on Telegram, Geraja attracted interest from individuals offering tasks allegedly linked to Russian intelligence.

The investigation revealed that recruitment often begins with low-risk, legal tasks such as taking photographs of specific locations, picking up packages, or purchasing SIM cards for small payments. These tasks eventually escalate into more serious intelligence-gathering activities, including monitoring defense companies, NGOs, and political figures, as well as collecting personal data.

During the operation, Geraja was contacted by German politician Jovica Jovic of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party. Jovic provided advice on growing the channel, including suggestions to film videos dancing on a NATO flag. When questioned about potential links to Russian intelligence, Jovic initially gave ambiguous responses before later denying any connection to intelligence services or disinformation campaigns.

Following the exposure of the undercover operation, Geraja reported receiving death threats from unidentified individuals.
