German Kopernikusschule's Study Trip to Auschwitz Emphasizes Holocaust Memory

Twenty‑six students from the Kopernikusschule in Freigericht, Germany, travelled with teachers Lara Reimer and Dr. Maximilian Becker to the Auschwitz‑Birkenau memorial in Oświęcim, Poland. Organized by Alexander Rohrbeck, the visit included guided tours of Auschwitz I and the extermination camp Auschwitz‑Birkenau, where pupils learned about the conditions and crimes of the Nazi regime.

The program continued with a day in Krakow, where the group explored the historic Jewish quarter, attended a service in an active synagogue and dined at a Jewish restaurant. Evening reflection sessions provided a space for the students to discuss their impressions and consider the responsibility that remembrance entails. The trip, part of the school’s European‑school curriculum, aims to link historical learning with present‑day civic responsibility.
